Best Homemade Play Dough Recipe

I don't know what it is like at your house, but at ours, anything that is messy, colorful or squishy, is usually a big hit. And if it's something that falls into all of those categories, and the children can help create it, well that is just icing on the cake! The best part of this "recipe" is that is actually isn't messy at all... but shhhhhhh, don't let the children in on our little secret.

We love all kinds of play-doh, don't get me wrong. However, your typical store bought play-doh tends to make a big mess, with little pieces ending up on the floor and somehow appearing days after it was initially played with. That is why this diy play dough is so great. It functions like regular play-doh, and you can play with it just like you would the stuff you purchased from the store, but it is less messy and super easy to clean up. It is also fun for your little ones to get to see the process of making the dough, and maybe even help you with it!

It took us about 10 minutes, and there was enough for each of our two children to have about a cup of it to play with!! I split the recipe in half, and put half of the ingredients in one pot, and the other half in a separate pot so that i could make 2 different colors with one batch. You can put it all in one pot, if you just want to make a batch of one color.

Play Dough Recipe:

1 C Water

2 T Vegetable oil

1 C All-Purpose Flour

1/4 C Salt

2 T Cream of Tarter

Food Coloring Gel (don't worry, this will not end up all over their hands!)

Select a medium sized pot (or two pots, if you are making this like I did) and place water and oil in the pot, then stir. Add in the flour, salt and cream of tarter and mix with a spoon. Then add in food coloring until your desired shade of color is reached.

Turn the burner on to medium, and place the pot on the stove and begin stirring immediately. Stir constantly for approximately 5 minutes or until the dough pulls away from the edges of the pot and forms a ball in the middle.

Remove the dough from the pot, and place on wax paper to cool. Once it is cool enough to touch, you can let your little ones kneed the dough until it is smooth. Enjoy!

The play dough can be stored in any air tight container or sandwich bag.
